North Pole Home of Santa's Workshop

The original park, known as Alpine Village, was the work of Disney artist Arto Monaco, who came up with the design after asking an 8-year-old girl what she thought Santa's house would look like. The village was home to glassblowers, candle makers, puppeteers, a dancing monkey, a tic-tac-toe playing chicken and the infamous Elmer the Elf, who heckled visitors while they browsed artisan wares. And while attendance at the park has inched up over the years, reaching up to 1, people per day in the peak month of July, Lawhorn said the park has retained much of its original charm, bringing the same families back time and time again.

It's rare in this day and age to share a childhood experience with your kids in the same way that you experienced it," Lawhorn said as rain drops began to fall on Alpine Village. But Colorado's brief summer thunderstorms usually do little more than interrupt rides and send visitors running for cover, she noted. Just inside the entrance to Santa's Enchanted Forest, Colorado Springs native Krista Gingerich, who remembers visiting the park as a child, waited in line for the merry-go-round with her 4-year-old daughter Ellie.

In a tiny hut nearby, Karen Duck watched her husband Bill, whom she met while working at the park, led a demonstration in glassblowing, twirling molten glass into the form of a Christmas tree. The couple retired several years ago, but they have since returned to man the glass-blowing shop at the park during the summertime.

Karen, who used to dress as Pocahontas when The North Pole had an Native American-themed gift shop in the shape of a teepee, was introduced to Bill when she began working at the park in On her lunch breaks, she would frequent his shop, where her friend Mary worked. In a case cluttered with delicate ornaments at the glassblowers shop, a faded photograph shows the couple when they first met. Bill is brandishing one freshly crafted glass trinket, and Karen is holding another, in a deerskin dress with her dark hair in braids.
